Ten Reasons Why China Sucks
This ridiculous article titled "From cells to bells, 10 things the Chinese do far better than we do" has been making the rounds in the blogosphere these past few days. I say ridiculous because it was obviously written by someone who has not traveled widely in Asia (or at least meant for someone who has not traveled widely in Asia), as almost all of the things that the author claims China does better (like cheap cell phones, stop lights that count down, wireless service bells, parking data, slipcovers for chairs in restaurants, etc, etc) can be found all over Asia (HK, Seoul, Tokyo, Taipei, etc, etc). It's an Asian thing, not a China thing.
In response to that, I present you with my list of ten scary-ass things about China, most of which are uniquely Chinese. For this list, I won't include anything pertaining to politics and government (like human rights, or lack thereof, for example). You could easily make a top 1000 list of horrible things about China if you included the government. This list will only include stuff that bother the heck out of me on a day-to-day basis living here. Keep in mind that I've spent most of my time in China in Shanghai, easily China's most advanced city (along with Beijing). Everything I mention below is progressively worse the further out from Shanghai you go. Believe me, I've ventured past Shanghai several times and each time I've been scared shitless.
1. The internet here is almost unusably bad. Many overseas sites simply aren't reachable and even the ones that are, are very, very slow. Must be their uber censorship router filtering everything coming into the country.
2. Horrible Mandarin. A properly educated mainland Chinese person speaks beautiful Mandarin, I have to admit. Unfortunately, most Chinese people aren't well educated and they speak horrendous Mandarin.
3. Simplified writing is an abomination. It's as if one day the American government decided that not enough people are literate so they decide to adopt text messaging shortcuts as the national written language "cuz it's EZer 2 Lern."
4. Chinese people have absolutely no concept of waiting in line. It's just one manifestation of the general lack of curtesy here. I've never met a population of people that exhibited such rudeness. It's all part of the lack of education that I mentioned before.
5. Pollution. And I include with this not only the horrible air pollution, but noise pollution as well. The constant honking on the streets slowly drives me insane as I walk around the city. I know this isn't just Chinese, it happens in many other places, but man, they love to honk here. Car horns. Bicycle horns. Police whistles. It's non-stop noise everywhere.
6. If the honking doesn't drive you mad, the cacaphony of people hocking up phlegm will do it. Maybe it's the horrible air quality, but why do Chinese people have so much phlegm????
7. Chinese people love to yell. You'll usually find at least one or two people on every block angrily screaming at someone about something or other.
8. Food generally speaking is horrible here. The hygiene is low-to-non-existent and the culinary skills are seriously lacking as well. I wouldn't be caught dead eating anything from a street vendor in China. You can get food poisoning just by looking at them. Speaking of restaurants, the quality of service in China stinks as well. Due to the cheap labor, the ratio of the waiters to customers is frequently 2-to-1. Yet most Chinese wait staff have no idea how to properly wait a table.
9. Bad architecture and design. Chinese people's concept of good architecture is a building with a faux european renaissance look with a lot of gold trimming, hopefully with a fancy top. Driving around Shanghai, you'll notice that almost every building has some sort of "hat" on top.
10. Too many instances of dirty old men paired with hot young things. It's just disgusting and sad. I know there are sugar daddys all over the world, but it's literally all over the streets here. You can't turn around without seeing an old man with a pretty young girl.
I'll end the list at ten, but I could go on and on. Well, I've always said China is a scary-ass place. Scary as in it's scary backwards. It's progressing fast, no doubt, but it's still very, very backwards. Scary, too, because it is progressing beyond the sophistication of the populace.

here are some other bad things about china which i learned on my trip.
during my trip to hang zhou ( satalite city of shanghai). my friend and i dined in a nice 4 star restaurant. good service, very clean. cept the washroom had holes in the ground.(bewarey you adventurous travellers: learn to use the old hole in the ground).

Great article. china is a horrendously disgusting country, and don't even get me started on their hygiene. They put so many chemicals in their food, like (like enjecting dyes into their oranges to make them more orange). They even eat dogs! (apparantly, black dogs are the best). I wrote this post because there has been a lot of misinformation in the Western press about China, written by people who have either never been to China or just saw the glitzy parts of Shanghai and Beijing while living in a 5-star hotel and probably being "serviced" by a masseuse. Is it any wonder that they are giddy with excitment? I just wanted to point out some realities of China to counter-balance the rosey picture that most seem to want to paint.

Your comments are absolutely accurate. I have traveled to China 6 times in the past 15 months for business, including Beijing, Shanghai, Fuzhou, Xiamen, and Guangzhou. I laughed my ass off at each number because you hit them dead on. NICE LIST!

I wish the whole wolrd would stop romanticizing China and making it seem like such a remarkable. That list mostly dead on accurate. I have live in China for a year. Yes I hate it. Yes I wish I wasn't here but since most companies are "selling out" here in China, some of use have to face the reality of living and working in China. I have traveled to about 60 countries in my life and all 7 continents and I have never met more rude, loud, greedy, stupid, arrogant people than I have in China. The food sux balls. Sure you can luck out in a few places but it mostly sux. And its so funny because the Chinese think there food is so great. The pollution is horrible anywhere you go. 5% of tap water is drinkable. Rivers, lakes and canals are so massively polluted that I think u may die if u jumped in from all the bacteria. Also, they are so difficult to work with. They are lazy and will not do anything that is too difficult. Being an engineer here is so frusturating because they are so unskilled at evreything they do. Chinese chicks are disguisting. I hooked up with several chicks and while they were giving me a BJ, they all kept spitting during the process so it made me limp everytime. Also, they don't really clean down there if u know what I mean. One thing you didn't mention on your list was driving. They don't follow any rules and it is so unsafe. I think their greed will catch up to them and destroy China eventually. The rich are getting pretty damn rich and the poor stay dirt ass poor. Real Estate is rising so fast in Suzhou where I live that I can barely afford a place. I make about 50 times the $$$ that the chinese make. The Chinese Engineers make about 3000RMB per month. That's about 365USD. My rent in Suzhou is 4 times that. I really kinda feel sorry for them because they don't know any better. They all feel that their "blind obedience" to their government or company will pay dividends so maybe they will get promoted or get a 10RMB raise. They have no sense or worth because their greed blinds them. They always fail to see the big picture. If Chinese workers were smart, they would start forming unions. I know unions suck and they nearly ruined America but these people have no rights. They get paid crap and have to work their asses off for many extra hours with no overtime. For their sake, they should rally together and start standing up for their rights...oh wait they already did that. Remember Tienemin Square?? Its also funny how much they hate the Japanese. The government sponsored protests last month were quite amusing. China claims it didn't encourage protesting but there were signs up all over Shanghai to direct people to the protests. China would not exist like it does w/out Japan. The Japs invest billions of dollars in China yearly. It would be funny if they pulled out. Have I covered everything? China is slowly taking over the world. I just wish that they had a nicer culture and people. Why can't a country like Thailand take over the world where the people are so lovely and nice and the chicks are beautiful and have manners. Or why can't Brazil take over the world..then the world would be one big party!!! You may think I am biased or a biggot. I am not. I love all people...except the Chinese. Somebody else take over, I'm getting tired of writing........

china is a shithole. i was in guandong (for only a day, thank god) in 98, horribly polluted cesspool of a city, people where rude, and just looking at what passed for "food" in some of the roadside stands made me wanna puke

They are unhygenic and cause you stomachache since they contain lead and cadnium with toxic chemicals..
If you want to be healthy, better not eat foods in China.

Chineses are so unpleasant.
I visited to China this summer, and I have never seen any people who are so nasty to tourists.
I went to Hotel, and the manager says the room costs about 40 US Dollar and foods in the fridge are all free. I had 2 cans of coke and a bottle of water.
But they charged me 200 Dollar.
I asked why, and the manager threated me with his folks with knives.
And he threated me if I don't give tips to them all.
I know that China is a sloppy Communist country, with low GDP per capita, but I have never seen as barbaric and brainless species in my life.
I got so disgusted and felt awful, so I cancelled the rest of the trip in China.
I recommend not to visit China.
China is the most unpleasant place to visit for tourists. If you visite there, you will lose money and will get assaulted at any time.

You guys can see how rude and unreasonable some chineses are here... It's simple as that! ... Most of Chinese are shit! ... Only a small handful of them is acceptable... You may be developing economically but CHINESES' MIND ARE JUST FULL OF SELFISHNESS.
Horrible country, horrible people...
Chineses go to HELL.

In some parts of China, there are realtions like in the middle ages. China has no Regulates. This country sucks! A pity for all the people who live there.

As an ethnic Chinese whose grandparents came to Malaya (now Malaysia), I always felt growing up that Chinese culture was very rough and uncouth. Don't get me wrong, I am not trying to put down or insult. I realize that my grandparents were from the peasant class and had they been from the upper class, maybe my impression would have been different. But living in a former British colony and exposed to education in missionary schools which emphasized politeness, cleanliness and good manners, Chinese culture (at least the rough peasant culture that many Chinese immigrants practiced) to me seemed very unsophisticated. Yes, I think Chinese culture has achieved a lot in the past but since the 1700's really stagnated or maybe even went backwards. I attribute this to arrogance. There is something about Chinese culture that makes them assume that they always know best and they don't need to learn from other cultures. This is an objective view as someone who is a ethnic Chinese and wants nothing but the best for the Chinese culture. I write based on my experience as descendents of Chinese immigrants. I have been to China, but only a brief visit to Beijing in 1998 so I won't comment on mainland Chinese culture. My wishlist on the Chinese culture that I am familiar with:
1. Discard the culture of cheapness. Stop trying to make everything using the cheapest methods possible.
2. Make cleanliness a priority.
3. Make aesthetics a priority. Stop making ugly things.
4. Stop telling ethnic Chinese who wants to improve Chinese culture to feel ashamed of themselves.
5. Make humility a virtue.
6. Learn from the Japanese. Yes, the Japanese nation did terrible things in the past but don't let the past be an obstacle to the future. The difference between Japanese and Chinese culture is like night and day. Japanese products and services are usually higher quality, more refined and more beautiful. Just look at the way the present their food and compare it with Chinese food. Japan is so clean and people are so polite.
I am not advocating Chinese imitate the Japanese, but simply learn a thing or two from them.
