Ulaanbaatar, Mongolia–September 18, 2012 – The American University of Mongolia Development Foundation (AUMDF) has announced the establishment of the American University of Mongolia (AUM) here, giving details of the development already underway.
The AUMDF was founded by a group of Mongolian and American business, educational and community leaders to bring the best traditions of American higher education to serve the unique needs of students in Mongolia. AUM will be an independent, non-profit liberal arts university modeled after successful universities in the U.S. and will be accredited by U.S. and Mongolian accreditation bodies.
J. Peter Morrow, an AUM founder, former Khan Bank CEO and now AUM’s chairman stated, “Our goal is to establish a first-class university; one that teaches locally but that thinks globally. We intend to educate young leaders for Mongolia’s future; leaders who can advance Mongolia in the global community.”
Morrow acknowledged the valuable support provided by the Newcom Group in the establishment of the foundation. “AUM could not exist today without the generous funding and support of the Newcom Group. Throughout the months of intensive planning and organizing at our inception, Newcom was there as the essential backer of the plan,” he said.
Ts. Boldbaatar, chairman of the Newcom Group and a founder of AUMDF, added, “We contributed substantial funds to the initial planning for the American University of Mongolia. We did that because it is a good investment for the future of Mongolia. We clearly recognize what a great asset AUM will be to Mongolia and the young people who will be our future.”
Founding individual and GE Foundation board representative Stephen Maloy, who recently retired as General Counsel Asia Pacific, General Electric Company, expressed his opinion about the value that AUM will bring to Mongolia and said, “Developing and preserving Mongolia’s gifts for future generations will require not only strong technical expertise but also a truly global perspective on human history, economics and culture. I am confident that AUM can help to prepare young Mongolians for a promising, exciting and challenging future.”
Cameron McRae, Rio Tinto Country Director, said, “Rio Tinto is pleased to be a part of this new partnership that will provide new opportunities for Mongolian to build skills and knowledge. This complements our existing $125 million commitment to education and training programs that Oyu Tolgo’s partners are investing in across Mongolia.”
Current Status of AUM
From 2010 to 2011, AUM staff worked in office space provided by Newcom to begin the planning and administrative work required to turn the concept of the university into a reality. In August 2011, the Center for Executive Education began delivering executive education courses in partnership with the University of California – Berkeley Haas School of Business and Coffey Projects (Australia) PL. CEE is also working with McKinsey’s Global Head of Leadership Development to deliver leadership programs.
In May 2012 AUM moved into its own office space in the City Plaza Building where staff are continuing and expanding activities to develop the university’s academic programs. AUM’s English Language Institute was formed in July 2012 and will begin offering its first courses in October 2012.
Future Development
AUM plans to offer an executive Master of Business Administration degree course starting in 2013. Following that, the first students will be accepted into the four-year undergraduate program in 2014. Degree programs in engineering, business administration and environmental sciences will be the first priorities, followed by additional graduate degree programs that will be developed at the masters and doctoral levels. AUM will eventually become a full-fledged research university that will stand as a center of excellence for the entire region.
Academics and Administration
Courses will be taught in English and preparatory courses will be offered to assist students who need to improve their language and academic skills before taking on full credit course work. Tuition costs, which will be modest for undergraduate courses, will be offset in many cases by scholarship programs and university subsidies. Faculty will be chosen from the very best American, Mongolian and other international scholars who have demonstrated outstanding academic excellence. The administration of the new university will include an experienced university president with a strong record of leadership and administrative excellence.
Current Facilities and Planned Campus
In the early stages of operation, AUM will offer its courses in commercial office space in the city center. Founders and staff are now actively engaged in exploring various locations for a planned campus that will include academic and administration buildings, a library, laboratories, residences, sports facilities and other structures necessary to support university operations. This effort includes meetings with government representatives and landowners as well as designers and engineers to determine the eventual location and design of the campus.
