MASTER OF THROAT SINGING KONGAR-OOL ONDAR FROM TUVA
The master of throat singing Kongar-ool Ondar from Tuva performs at the Second international festival of World music 'Sayanskoye koltso' (The Sayan Ring) near the village of Shushenskoye in Krasnoyarsk region, about 580 kms (360 miles) south of Krasnoyarsk, July 11, 2004. Throat singing is a unique technique when two timbres, high and low, are simultaneously taken. This technique is used by Mongols, Tuvinians and Kalmyks. The festival has gathered performers of ethnic music and dance from 22 regions of Russia, Mongolia, China and Australia.

Original caption: The Buryat-Mongolian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic. The Buryat-Mongolian ASSR situated in Siberia, around the Lake Baikal. The three quarters of its territory are covered with forests, mostly conifers. The population of the Republic is estimated at 621,000. The capital is Ulan-Ude. In the past, Buryat Mongolia represented a typical colony of tourist Russia. The emissaries of the tsarist govt. hindered in every way the development of national culture & oppressed the buryat population. Prior to the revolution, the buryats were for the greater part nomads & all of them illiterate. Their sole occupation was cattle raising. Now, the whole population is leading a sedentary life. A network of primary schools, some tens of technical schools & higher schools, are now at the disposal of the population. A mongolian national theatre in Ulan-Ude reflects the cultur
